Cool Orders of the Week
Hughes-Primeau Controls Feature Page
When a major Waste Water Treatment Plant in Michigan wanted to retrofit their 1952 vintage pumps/motors to obtain speed control, they specified and purchased four MagnaDrive vertical Adjustable Speed Drives. John E Green Co. was the successful contractor, and Jim Hoffer, of JL Hoffer Co., was the sales engineer who worked with Hubbell, Roth & Clark Consultants to specify and engineer the project. Shown below are two of the water cooled and two of the air cooled ASD's, in operation and successfully providing smooth, quiet speed control.
Industrial Pump & Valve Repair Co. provided the Turnkey Installation Assistance to help John E Green with the install. Good job to everyone who participated!
Water Cooled WV-1500 Vertical Adjustable Speed Drives:
Air Cooled 26.5ASDV Vertical Adjustable Speed Drives:
Dave Jerina was called to a plant to assist in replacing dual driven valves for a compressor application to increase on-line reliability. Dave worked with our specialty ball valve manufacturer-PBM, Inc.-to come up with just the custom fabricated solution they were looking for. Dave sold one unit, it was tested for a year, and his recommendation performed so he the plant ordered another assembly. This is an example of thinking and designing 'Outside the Box' utilizing one Kinetrol vane actuator to stroke two 3-way ball valves simultaneously. Kudos to PBM for another job well done:

Dave Jerina sold a MagnaDrive to a customer who requested that Hughes-Primeau build the pump base and pedestals, mount the customer supplied pump and motor, and pre-calibrate the drive and actuator. This will enable the customer to conveniently drop the entire skid into place, pipe and wire up to the device, and start operation. This is obviously a very robust piece of equipment. This further demostrates the value add Hughes-Primeau provides to all kinds of customer requests. What can we do for you?
MagnaDrive again makes headlines with their WV-1000 water cooled adjustable speed drive, installed on a high service water pump, 700 horsepower, 1800 rpm.
MagnaDrive provided a complete assembly, so during retrofitting of the pump/motor installation, the contractor merely had to measure the existing bolt dimensions, lift the motor, and slide the MagnaDrive unit in between. The owner salvaged their 30 year-old standard duty constant speed motor and pump, and are now able to enjoy the energy savings and reduced maintence with the adjustable speed and disconnected shaft technology. Vibration levels are virtually non-existent.
This waste water treatment plant had 6 MagnaDrive adjustable speed drives installed on 75 & 100 HP motors in May 2005. They were operating very well since, with 3 controlling influent pumps, and 3 controlling effluent flow. In early February, 2006, it was reported that a leak in the piping caused influent to flood the basement where they were located with 4 feet of sludge water. The customer reported the incidence, and asked us to send in a MagnaDrive technician to inspect the drives for operation after they were done repairing the motors. After washing down the drives, inspecting the actuators, and repositioning the drives onto the motor shafts, the motors were started back up, and the MagnaDrive ASD's started operating fine again.
Reliability, durability, minimized downtime, ease of maintenance, immediate restarts. Proven performance by this real experience.
(We later found out that this was the SECOND time that they were flooded.)
Every week we have a salesman stroll in and show some great pictures of unique solutions they were able to accomplish for one of their customers. Below is a solution for a local chemical company that needed to upgrade the water control panel for their critical pollution control Bioway system. 35 automated valves, along with as many manual valves, all pre-installed in specially pre-fabricated plastic pipe, & all shoe-horned into extremely tight panel frames, were delivered to the customer for their installation in an 8 hour shutdown.
Mission accomplished, with customer satisfaction!
A local steel mill was experiencing excessive wear and maintenance on an eccentric plug valve in a very abrasive quench line and really needed tight shutoff. The customer was convinced to buy Quality, and sold a 12" Larox high pressure pinch valve with pneumatic cylinder. Below is a picture of this problem solving valve installed in the application:
John Primeau multi-tasked with one particular customer who needed process improvement in his clean room piping. The only way to do this was to install new stainless steel piping, with automated ITT Pure-Flo polished diaphragm valves, and electrically heat trace them with Thermon to maintain 85 degrees C. HPC also provided a unique three-way diverting diaphragm valves, with quick disconnect ends that eliminates any pockets for contaminents to spoil future batches.
The changeout of piping and installation of new valves, heat tracing and programming of controllers had to occur over two successive weekends.
The customer is very happy with improved performance, and reduced downtime for cleaning.
John Primeau landed a project for six (6) Vertical MagnaDrive Adjustable Speed Drives, three of which are shown below. Installation of the drives went smoothly with Project Manager Scott Dockrill and Foreman Tim Fitzmaurice of Bay Mechanical & Electrical Corp. installing these units on KSB vertical pumps through the assistance of Rich Frey of National Pump. Hughes-Primeau was there to assist in the installation and startup of the units.
CT Consultants was the engineering consultant for this pump station upgrade.
The photo of the nickel below is actually showing how smooth the unit is while running from startup to full speed.
Contact John Primeau (jprimeau@hughes-primeau.com) to be emailed a digital movie of the startup of the unit.
Dave Jerina landed a significant order for two (2) 'SE-20' Severe Service Valves manufactured by Masoneilan.
The Place: A local major power plant, supercritical unit, 650 MW
The Application: B & W '210' Turbine Bypass or Main Steam Drain Valves,
Design Conditions: 4500# ANSI Class, 3785 psig inlet, 0 psi downsteam, 1005 deg F
Operating Conditions: 1000 psig inlet, 100 psig downsteam, 950 deg F
The Size: 4" x 8" Angle Pattern SE-20 valves
The Trim: Drilled Hole Design to provide a tortuous path, pressure drop staging, and
expanding flow area to handle the significant pressure drop. These valves require tight shutoff.
The Media: Superheated steam, mixed with condensate and scale from the pipes-a very tough application!
Congratulations to Dave for a job well done coordinating with Mike Hartsel
and the Severe Service Application Engineers at Masoneilan.
(By the way-the results are in! These severe service valves have been up and operating in 2005 up to the customers expectations! And our competition said they wouldn't work, well bring it on!
Masoneilan Model 'SE-20' Control Valve
Hughes-Primeau Controls continues to solve customer problems by providing quick turnaround service on repairs to a 36" SP Kinney butterfly valve. This valve was repaired to 'like-new' condition in less than a week, driven back to the plant by our company truck, and installed immediately.
This order was delivered on time for a critical outage at a Blast Furnace Water Treatment Plant. There was a three day window to put these gates in. This would be the only opportunity in possibly YEARS to do the work. HPC designed the gates dimensionally to fit, expedited with Fontaine to assure on time delivery and assisted with field installation and start up. The gates allow a man to safely enter into pit’s to clean and remove sludge build up that the customer was not able to do before. This increases productivity and effiency along with saving money with the vacuum trucks.

Dave Jerina is due kudos for his Masoneilan LincolnLog installation at a local power station in very high pressure drop water applications. Dave sold these two (2) LincolnLog valves to handle up to 3000 psi pressure drop, minimizing noise, trim erosion, and it is 'trash tolerant'-that is it handles particles and scale in the flow stream. So far, the plant reports that after 4 months in service, they respond smoothly to input signals to the Masoneilan 'SVI-2' Smart HART digital positioner.
Below, a technician is wiring up one of the two 'SVI-2' positioners.
When your application requires an Engineered Valve, call us! We have the tools YOU need.
Further demonstrating the 'Bundling' concept to the fullest on a customers new barge onload/offload facility, Paul Krause provided our customer a Turnkey heat tracing installation, including everything from electrical distribution, panels, high temperature heating cable, insulation and removable covers that fit like a glove, and the labor to install, test, and startup the job.
On top of that, he secured a huge order for the automated ABZ high performance butterfly valves with specially fitted hydraulic actuators and controls.
Kudos for an smoothly engineered and installed project!
Mike Hartsel and John Primeau teamed to land an order for two 4" LincolnLog valves, Masoneilan's Severe Service valve for use on 3000 psi differential pressure. This valve, with a solid F22 body, ANSI Class 2500, is used on severe liquid service to eliminate damaging cavitation. The appearance of the plug is that of a Lincoln Log, but it is anything but a toy! Ask us for excellent references, and a growing installed base in Northern Ohio!
In six months, Paul Krause also has landed orders for two, Dave Jerina earned orders two valves, with more repeat purchases to come from satisfied customers.
Here, Mike is assisting the customer prep the valve for installation and heat treating/stess relieving.
We are there for our customers, every step of the way.
Paul Krause added to his successful "value added" reputation by securing an order for high quality PBM ball valves, Hytork spring return actuators, and Masoneilan SVI-2 HART Smart Digital Positioners.
The positioners are rugged, self tuning, and have on board diagnostics to tell the Tech the condition of the assembly.
The unique thing about these positioners, they will fit on ANYBODIES 1/4 turn or linear actuator!
Call us for more information about how we can optimize and tune your control loop.
Working closely with our client, these air panels were designed and assembled by HPC to control dozens of our automatic on-off lined ball and diaphragm valves in sequence. The end user did not have the resources to design and fabricate these pneumatic panels, so Hughes-Primeau Controls worked carefully to discern what the customer needed, and assembled these panels using the finest components, including ASCO manifold solenoid valves.
MagnaDrive successes in Northern Ohio continue with the recent installation and SMOOTH startup of a 20.5ASD foot mount adjustable speed drive.
This critical installation on a 250 HP and 1800 RPM pump application promotes energy efficiency with increased reliability, and significant installed
cost savings over VFD's.
Here is the unit prior to startup after supervising the installation. The foot mount design allows the user to just slip-in and couple the unit between the motor
and the pump shafts, with no extra adjustment necessary. As soon as the actuator and positioner were hooked up and operational, the unit was started
and immediately started controlling the pump speed.
Call us for more details.
The exciting sight and sound of another MagnaDrive installation starting up, spinning, and controlling at a Water Pump Station located in Southeastern Ohio. This customer has two pumps/motors on concrete pedestals. One has had a VFD controlling speed on pump #1, while pump #2 was constant speed. The customer wanted (and got!) side by side comparison of the MagnaDrive vs. VFD.
Within 4 DAYS, the MagnaDrive proved it's worth. A power surge took out the VFD, while the MagnaDrive was able to maintain water pressure in the line-MANUALLY-before it could get hooked up to a control signal to control automatically.
The surrounding neighborhood and businesses never even knew that there was a problem with the pump station.
Hughes-Primeau was asked by a customer to rush ship two teflon lined v-ported control ball valves in less than a week.
Inside sales teamed together to provide the necessary valves with positioners in time for the customers shutdown.
Everyone was pleased with the equipment and the delivery. Great job, guys!
Hughes-Primeau Controls has definitely arrived on the Process Control and Control Valve scene now. Paired up with an Industry Leader like Masoneilan offers our customers more reasons to come to Hughes-Primeau for their Flow Solutions. Shown below is a 16" 600 Lb. ANSI Series 10000 Double Ported Control Valve, one of a half dozen sold and getting ready to ship. John Primeau was at the factory to inspect one of Paul Krause's orders for one of of the first valves ready to receive it's actuator and ship out the door.
The actuator stands another 7 feet above the bonnet!
If your plant needs a Creative Flow Solution, call Hughes-Primeau Controls!
As part of the Value Add-Single Source Supply theory of service for our clients, Hughes-Primeau Controls built boiler controls utilizing our Intertec NEMA 4X fiberglass enclosures with window, Honeywell single loop controllers, and Daily Instruments Thermocouples and Thermowells.
The Honeywell controllers were mounted in the boxes, HPC pre-wired them to a terminal strip, and supplied T/C's and wells of a variety of lengths. Ask us to prepare the entire loop for your next project.
Check out this joint-an 84" MicroFlex metal expansion joint.
Under budget and it shipped sooner than expected. Congratulations!!
An impressive installation of a MagnaDrive on a Vaughan Chopper Pump in a local Waste Water Treatment Plant has been started up. This installation is unique in it's high torque requirements if the pump should undergo a sudden change in load from an obstruction in the flow stream. The chopper pump needs speed adjustment, and has the ability to 'chop' up solids, rope, or just about anything else. John Primeau led the customer to MagnaDrive's unique ASD magnetic, non-contact drive, controlled by a robust, smooth Honeywell Herculine 120 volt actuator with a 4-20mA positioner. Elegant in it's simplicity to control pump speed.

Another skid of pumps goes out the door with the MagnaDrive ASD Adjustable Speed Coupling driving the pumps. The Customer appreciated the simplicity of this mechanical, non-contact drive over VFD's. Hughes-Primeau supervised the installation of these drives.HPC assists with turnkey installations of this product, all in order to make it an easy yet robust retrofit for our customers. These drives are being controlled by Hytork pneumatic actuators and PMV positioners.
You should consider MagnaDrive on your next installation of variable speed pumps or blowers.
Value Add is the buzz word about Hughes-Primeau Controls by our customer base. We came through on an outage for five (5) pneumatic panels built to control banks of ASCO valves. These panels had to provide control to 20+ valves, with auxilliary overrides, prepiped and terminated, and with improved components to withstand the heat and dirt in the area. Sold by John Primeau, these panels enabled our customer to be done sooner than the planned outage required.
Rush orders are becoming something of a specialty for HPC. This rush project was sold by Paul Krause, and we performed!
Equipment sold on this project include:
5 each 16" ABZ rubber seated butterfly valves, 16" Valmatic double door check valves and 16" Proco expansion joints were on site within 3 days to assure our customer of a timely startup on a last minute decision to swap out some existing failing equipment.
Wonderful performance again! We will do the same thing for YOU!
Once again Hughes-Primeau came through for a customer in need of an 8" 600 Lb. ANSI class Full Ported PBV ball valve with Hytork actuator, all mounted, assembled and delivered within one 1 week to meet a shutdown. Steve Dugach hauled in the order, with oversight and assembly assistance from
Hughes-Primeau Controls. The customer was pleasantly surprised when the valve package showed up at his dock AHEAD of the scheduled delivery date.
Great job again, boys!
The 'Impossible' just takes us a little bit longer, (< 1 week)
Hughes-Primeau shipped 35 Tomoe Tritec 900# ANSI Class Triple Offset metal seated butterfly valves with El-O-Matic actuators to a major OEM customer who serves the Power Generation industry. These valves were high pressure steam block and throttling valves, in sizes ranging from 6", 8", and 10" size.
Another MagnaDrive installation occurred in February '03 with an 8.5 ASD mounted to a 25 HP, 3600 RPM motor, Hytork XL-186 double acting pneumatic actuator and explosion proof Fisher positioner. This allows our customer to install an all explosion proof adjustable speed drive on a pump in a Class I Division 1 rated area, saving a considerable amount of money on total installed cost over variable frequency drives, while realizing significant energy savings.
Our Automation Department has been very busy this month, featuring the assembly and shipment of 1-24", 1-20" & 1-18" diameter Valmatic plug valves, with Bettis/Hytork G Series double acting pneumatic actuators, manual overrides, & Fisher Fieldvue positioners.
One good order deserves another, so HPC worked closely with ITT Engineered Valves factory representative Dale Selan to land another large project,
this time with 3 each 20" diameter ITT Fabri Valve cylinder operated Fig 133 slide gate valves, being used as isolating line blind style valves.
Delivery was critical, and ITT's quick ship program enabled us to land this important order!
In addition, they sold 3 each 4" and 2" Fetterolf line blind valves on this order. Dale provided value added by pre-assembling pipe spool pieces to each valve
to slip into the customers existing face-to-face dimensions. All were assembled and shipped in under the quoted delivery requirements from the customer.
A lift truck waits behind the valve pictured below to give you size proportions.
Valve orders are nice, but so are those for our new line-MagnaDrive. Pictured below is an 10.5 ASD adjustable speed drive being installed
on a motor shaft, driving a gearbox, which turns a pulley, which pulls a thick wire 'rope'. This installation is on a tensioner for sheet steel.
The customer has reported complete success so far, eliminating vibration, and he has proven the reliability over
Variable Frequency Drives and Eddy Current Drives.
The ASD is modulated with a rugged Honeywell Herculine electric motor with a simple 4-20mA input signal, & runs as smooth as a top.
This week we would like to feature an 8" 1500 Lb. ANSI full ported valve assembly with pneumatic actuator sold by Paul Krause.
This valve was required AND delivered in less than a week because of a forced shutdown.
